Construction materials
The CSIR’s construction materials research group promotes and supports contextually cognisant knowledge-generation and application of science, technology and innovation in buildings by leveraging multidisciplinary perspectives. The focus of the group is on functional building infrastructure planning, construction and operation through the use of innovative building technologies, sustainable materials and the development of decision-support models and tools, as well as building infrastructure assessment and management tools. These interventions have the potential to improve South Africa’s building infrastructure performance to ensure sustainable and competitive socioeconomic activity.
The CSIR focuses on green, high-performance, lower cost cements, including geopolymers and concretes, and lifecycle assessments. The group’s work is highly relevant, since materials are at the centre of infrastructure. The competencies in the group are materials science and technology (including ceramics and metals), civil and structural engineering, chemical engineering, and lifecycle assessment. The research group develops new and improved materials that are greener than conventional materials.
