On Tuesday, 8 October 2024, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) hosts a hybrid media briefing where cybersecurity experts will present the findings of four national cybersecurity surveys conducted by the CSIR. In the 2023/24 financial year, the CSIR commissioned the national cybersecurity surveys working with partners such as the Cybersecurity Hub under the Department of Digital Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT).

CSIR hosts hundreds of learners from marginalised schools to encourage uptake of STEM careers

The CSIR hosts learners at its annual career day aimed at igniting an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among grade 9, 10 and 11 learners who have chosen mathematics and science as their subjects.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies,  addressed scientists, engineers and researchers from public and private sector at the 6th CSIR Conference that took place on 5 and 6 October 2017 at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria. Minister Rob Davies emphasised that in order for South Africa to be globally competitive, it needs to find new ways of boosting the economy through industrial development.

The South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 9 May 2017 to collaborate on a national multi-static passive radar facility. The CSIR and ATNS will join forces to establish a technology base that will be utilised to establish solutions in partnership with local industry.

A far-reaching cooperation agreement was signed late last year, which forms the foundation of the partnership that will see Coega assisting the CSIR with the commercialisation and industrialisation of related intellectual property, while the CSIR will assist in the development of the Coega SEZ’s value proposition in knowledge intensive and advanced manufacturing sectors by becoming an official research and development (R&D) partner of the corporation.

According to the Group Executive for CSIR Advanced Chemistry and Life Sciences, Dr Rachel Chikwamba, “The CSIR views this partnership as a necessary doorway to industrialisation. It supports the realisation of the many years of CSIR investment in the natural fiber and composite materials and will further enable rapid commercialisation of other technologies across the CSIR.”

CSIR research into dynamic spectrum and future internet networks continues to garner international recognition; this after a paper co-written by the CSIR and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) won Best Paper at this year’s IST-Africa Week in Namibia. In 2015, the CSIR’s research into dynamic spectrum management was also awarded Best Paper at the International Conference on Internet in Malaysia.

The CSIR is at an advanced stage of implementing its new strategy, a move that will see the adoption of a re-organised CSIR-wide operating model.

To this end, the science, engineering and technology (SET) staff reorganisation and confirmation commenced in August 2019 and this process was completed successfully in September 2019. After a rigorous process of reviewing and benchmarking against our peers, both locally and internationally, in October 2019, we commenced with the reorganisation of our support staff across the CSIR.
