This multidisciplinary science, engineering and technology base is made up of individuals who are highly specialised in their respective fields. They are geneticists, virologists, software developers, polymer chemists, applied mathematicians and industrial engineers, just to name a few.

Schaefer investigates the fate and persistence of microbial pathogens in aquatic environments and develops biological remediation strategies for wastewater treatment.
Kellerman’s key interests include the assessment and management of developmental impacts and different land use regimes on biodiversity and terrestrial ecosystems; facilitation and management of public participation processes and stakeholder engagement; as well as environmental legal compliance, skills development and further training.
Kalombo’s research focus is particle engineering for any medical applications (therapeutics, diagnostics and vaccines) as well as water treatment and phase-change materials.
Marais’ research focuses on development, especially the use of information and communications technology for development. Community informatics, systems thinking and decision-making expertise are applied to improve service delivery systems in education, health and rural development.
