The fall of ground in underground coal mines is called goafing. Unplanned or unexpected goafs have significant economic and safety consequences for the mines. The CSIR has developed a product that has no competition globally to provide early warning of these goafs. The product consists of embedded electronics with sensors packaged as an intrinsically safe device that can be installed in underground mines near the coal face. The product is now available for licensing to interested manufacturing and service providers.
