The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), together with its entities the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Mandela Mining Precinct (MMP), will showcase technologies that have been developed to improve mining efficiencies at the African Mining Indaba.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and WWF South Africa are spearheading a five-year project to support the development of circular plastic packaging and systems to reduce plastic pollution from the food and beverage industry.
It is widely acknowledged that plastic pollution is not only an environmental challenge, but it also includes socio-economic and potential human health and human rights challenges. Yet, while much of the attention has focused on improved waste management, this project will focus exclusively on upstream and midstream interventions in the plastic packaging value chain – looking at how to turn off the tap on problem plastics at source. The Independent Institute of Education Proprietary Limited (IIE) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), an entity of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 13 October 2023, for purposes of collaboration in industry focussed skills development and innovation support initiatives leveraging from the CSIR Learning Factory.
A Learning Factory is a facility that aims to mimic a realistic working environment to provide future-focused education and training as well as fostering innovation.
The MoU between the two parties will result in the establishment of joint initiatives aimed at strengthening the cybersecurity of mobile networks and safeguarding customer data and privacy. This includes joint efforts in researching and developing cybersecurity technologies, protocols and standards. Moreover, the agreement between the CSIR and ACT holds significant importance as it provides a framework for leveraging synergies. This collaboration will enable the undertaking of strategic projects aligned with the mandates of both organisations.
Titled "Advances in Materials Processing and Manufacturing," this book offers a thorough examination of state-of-the-art materials production. It features in-depth discussions on a wide range of subjects, such as powder metallurgy processing, mechanisms of deformation, analysis of machining, material disposal, gear cutting, and laser cladding.
The book was launched in Pretoria on Friday, 10 November 2023. The book is a crucial resource designed to benefit researchers and graduate students in the field of materials and manufacturing engineering.
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is proud to have been named one of the 2023 United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Champions of the Earth, for its contribution to the fight against plastic pollution.
On 30 October 2023, UNEP announced that the CSIR had been selected as a 2023 Champion of the Earth, honoured in the Science and Innovation category.
